If you're having trouble with sound in Phasmophobia — such as not hearing the game, other players not hearing you, or echoing microphone audio — the following steps can help resolve common audio-related issues.
🔇 1. I Can’t Hear the Game
Step 1: Check the Volume Mixer
-
Right-click the volume icon in your system tray (bottom-right of your screen).
-
Select Open Volume Mixer.
-
Find Phasmophobia in the list and make sure it's not muted.
Step 2: Disconnect Unused Audio Devices
-
If you have a VR headset or other external audio devices connected, try unplugging them.
-
Phasmophobia uses your Windows default playback device, but can sometimes route audio to other devices.
🗣️ 2. My Friends Hear Themselves When I Talk
This usually happens due to microphone feedback or incorrect device settings. Follow these steps to fix it:
Step 1: Open Microphone Settings
-
Right-click the volume icon in the taskbar and select Sounds.
(Windows 11: Open Sound Settings, scroll down and click More sound settings.) -
Go to the Recording tab.
-
Right-click your microphone and select Set as Default Device (if it isn’t already).
-
Disable any other microphones by right-clicking them and selecting Disable.
Step 2: Adjust Microphone Properties
-
With your microphone selected, click Properties.
-
Go to the Advanced tab.
Under Default Format:
-
Choose: 2 channel, 16 bit, 44100 Hz (CD Quality) or lower.
Under Exclusive Mode:
-
Uncheck both boxes to prevent apps from overriding your mic.
Under Signal Enhancements:
-
Uncheck Enable audio enhancements.
Step 3: Adjust In-Game Settings
-
Use Push-To-Talk or Toggle Voice mode in Phasmophobia to reduce open-microphone echo.
🧑🤝🧑 3. Voice Chat Doesn’t Work / I Can’t Hear Other Players
If in-game voice chat isn’t working, it may be due to missing system components.
Step 1: Install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable (2019)
Depending on your system type, install the correct version:
-
For 32-bit systems (x86):
Download vc_redist.x86.exe -
For 64-bit systems (x64):
Download vc_redist.x64.exe

Step 2: Check Your Microphone Sample Rate
